Volunteer
Airedale Terrier Rescue of the Virginias is an all-volunteer organization. If you love Airedales and have even a little time to spare, we welcome your help! There are many opportunities to meet different interests, talents, and constraints. Interested? Please contact ATRVA.
We are looking for people who can:
Distribute ATRVA rescue information to pet stores and community centers: Many people, either seeking to adopt or needing to surrender their dog, find us this way.
Liaise with shelters: Create and maintain a relationship with your area shelters. Explain the activities of ATRVA and request that you be contacted if they receive an Airedale or are notified of an Airedale in need. Educate shelter staff in correctly identifying Airedales.
Keep watch for Airedale notices: Regularly check newspapers, pet store bulletin boards, and websites, such as, Craigslist, Petfinder, Google, etc. for “free to good home” advertisements. Few people know that Airedale Rescue is an option.
Participate in fund-raising: Create or donate an item for sale on eBay or ETSY and direct the proceeds to Rescue. Plan, host, or participate in a special fund-raising event.
Contribute to the ATRVA website: Snap appealing high-resolution images of dogs available for adoption and write informative descriptions. If you have WordPress skills, we can always put them to good use!
Groom: If you have experience grooming Airedales, you can get a dog looking his best and ready for adoption.
Transport: Dogs, foster homes, and adopters are scattered over the states of Virginia and West Virginia. Help with transport is always in demand!
Offer foster care: If you are able to shelter a homeless Airedale in transition, this is of critical importance.
Meet dogs prior to surrender: Visit the owner and dog to begin the surrender process.
Call references and vets: The adoption application requires this information, which helps ATRVA make the best adoption match.
Take your Airedale to meet potential adopters: Some people are attracted to Airedales on the basis of appearance alone but have no experience with Airedales. Some people are attracted by the Airedale’s reputation as a “hypoallergenic” dog and should have the opportunity for contact to test their tolerance.
Visit adoption applicants with your dog: The adoption process includes a structured home-visit. In order to make an appropriate match, it is vital to have knowledge of potential adopters and their home environment. Applicants benefit from contact with an experienced Airedale owner and the chance to interact with your Airedale.
Provide information for adopters in your area: Advice on finding an Airedale-familiar groomer, a boarding kennel, a trainer, or a vet in your area can be invaluable.
Train and counsel: Be available to offer supportive suggestions for resolving adjustment issues or behavioral problems.
